With the ever-increasing presence of mobile and ubiquitous computing in our lives, the digital word has become an important part of our daily experience. However, both worlds, physical and digital, are still clearly delineated. While visualization techniques allow us to gain better insight into the digital world, we can hardly ever be fully part of it. Extensions or augmentation of human sensory capacity is one of the avenues to get closer to the idea of transhumanism. The history of sensory augmentation goes well beyond the last thirty years, as evidenced by devices such as microscopes, bifocals, and binoculars. However, we can observe how close these tools have become to our bodies. Smart glasses, such as the HoloLens, and even smart contact lenses are manifestations of such a transition.

The talk will focus on leveraging advancements in Virtual and Augmented Reality, and Human-Computer Interaction to capture and reproduce the physical world, synthesizing the digital world, and adding the stimuli of human senses. Dr. Rechowicz will discuss how helping humans or machines to perceive and respond to these stimuli impacts many domains, including healthcare, manufacturing, humanities, and education. The talk will also discuss enabling humans to become part of the digital world as well as seamlessly integrate it with our lives in response to a high level of adaptiveness to ever increasing complexity of systems required. The last part of the presentation will introduce the Digital Senses Lab at Virginia Modeling, Analysis & Simulation Center (VMASC) led by Dr. Rechowicz and provide an overview of the demo session led by Mr. Hector Garcia, a senior project scientist at VMASC.
