Internet Technology and Otaku Culture
Since 1990, rapid advancement of network technology has created the Internet infrastructure to share information together in remote locations. It all started from using analog telephone lines with modem capable of sending 1200 to 2400 baud data per second. Soon, ISDN and ADSL have replaced its basic infrastructure, shifting to fiber connectivity for wider bandwidth capability with lower latency. With this broader bandwidth, information that we shared has shifted not only text, but pictures, audios, videos and more combined datasets. With these technological advancement, "Anime", "Game", "Comic" and some of the aggressive and innovative forms of pop culture became important contents to be shared using the Internet. These so-called “Otaku” cultures are now focused throughout the globe and play an important role to enhance innovative creativity. Objective of today’s presentation is to understand how the roots of these otaku cultural activities in the Internet have expanded to many countries as one of Simulacra with creators, and activists of the fields together with technologies. Together, we will introduce some key factors that make these cultural activities becoming the seeds of innovative internet technology solutions.
