IEEE Seminar: Navigating the Path to Net Zero: Challenges and Opportunities
IEEE Seminar: Navigating the Path to Net Zero: Challenges and Opportunities
Speaker: Owen Wilkes, FIET, Network Development Manager, National Grid
Time: 12:00 pm – 13:00 pm, 10th February 2025
Venue: G33, Mechanical Building (Y3 on the Map), University of Birmingham & Online via Teams
Abstract:
An insightful webinar delivered by the Network Development Manager at National Grid, who is leading the charge in designing the future of the UK’s transmission network. The Uk is preparing for a once-in-a-generation opportunity to revolutionise the grid in the face of new challenges and complexities, as we race towards achieving Net Zero.
Like it’s predecessors, the design for the future transmission network must embrace and enable the needs of society for today and the future, whilst anticipating and integrating advanced systems like HVDC, FACTS devices, and large-scale wind farms into the existing network. The webinar will explore how this modern design must balance social and economic factors, reliability, resilience, and security of supply—all while ensuring the network remains operable and that its capabilities can be effectively leveraged by system operators.
Owen will share insights into overcoming uncertainties and design challenges, highlighting how we can create a future-proof network that supports the UK’s Net Zero ambitions. This is an opportunity to understand the pivotal role of network design in shaping a sustainable energy future.
