Abstract:

This presentation will introduce the series capacitor buck dc-dc converter developed at Texas Instruments. Point-of-load voltage regulators typically use buck converters operating in the hundreds of kHz range. Their size is dominated by passive components, especially inductors. The series capacitor buck topology overcomes conventional high frequency challenges and enables efficient operation in the multi-MHz range. The topology is a unique hybrid of a switched capacitor circuit and a buck converter. This presentation will overview the operation, control, and implementation of a 2-5 MHz series capacitor buck converter and include sample results with comparisons to state-of-the-art buck converters.
