New Research on Fountain Codes
Digital fountain codes (also known as rateless codes) are a class of forward-error-correction (FEC) codes that require almost no feedback with simple encoding and decoding structures. The famous fountain codes are LT codes and Raptor codes. Fountain codes are applied to application layer coding and two systematic Raptor codes have been adopted by 3GPP Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (MBMS). In recent years, the design of fountain codes has been extended to noisy channels (e.g., BIAWGN channels and fading channels). In physical layer, an erroneous estimation of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) will significantly degrade the decoding performance. The research on performance analysis of fountain codes with channel estimation errors under belief-propagation (BP) decoding has not yet been investigated so far. Motivated by this, this talk will first discuss how to analyse BP decoding performance of LT codes with channel estimation errors. Second, this talk will introduce a modified design of Raptor codes for small message length. Lastly, this talk will discuss cross-layer design that has concentrated on the joint optimisation of application layer FEC and physical layer FEC over wireless channels.
