This workshop, open to all students, aimed to introduce participants to essential version control concepts, practical Git commands, and effective collaboration using GitHub. It saw enthusiastic participation from students eager to enhance their software development workflow using industry-standard tools.

The primary goal was to equip attendees with fundamental knowledge and hands-on experience in version control using Git and GitHub. The session focused on:

  • The importance of version control in software development
  • Basic and advanced Git commands
  • Branching, merging, and resolving conflicts
  • Collaboration techniques using GitHub, including pull requests and issues

Day 1: Introduction to Git & Basic Commands The first day began with an introduction to version control, explaining Git’s role in modern development. Topics included:

  • Installing and setting up Git
  • Basic Git commands: git init, git add, git commit, git status, git log
  • Understanding repositories and commits
  • Hands-on exercises for initializing and tracking changes in a Git repository

Day 2: GitHub & Collaborative Development The second day focused on GitHub and team collaboration. Topics included:

  • Creating and managing repositories on GitHub
  • Cloning, forking, and contributing to open-source projects
  • Branching strategies and merging
  • Handling conflicts and pull requests
  • Best practices for working in a team using GitHub
