Validate Your Dual-polarized Phased Array Beamformer Over the Air With a Phase-Coherent VNA
IEEE North Jersey Section Co-Sponsors the TALK: "Validate Your Dual-polarized Phased Array Beamformer Over the Air With a Phase-Coherent VNA"
Modern phased array systems require over-the-air (OTA) testing under far-field conditions. As the number of elements in the array increases, both OTA and cable losses in direct far-field setups also rise due to the longer distance to the far field. Future dual-polarized phased arrays will integrate frequency-converting integrated circuits (ICs), which will require five-port phased coherent measurements for calibration and verification—unless they are calibration-free, like the Fujikura PAAM.

Validate Your Dual-polarized Phased Array Beamformer Over the Air With a Phase-Coherent VNA
The following topics will be discussed:
1. Challenges and design features of calibration-free phased arrays in beamforming.
2. Trade-offs involved in establishing far-field conditions and the basics of CATR (Compact Antenna Test Range).
3. The difficulties associated with using a 5-port vector network analyzer for phased arrays that incorporate frequency converters.
4. The performance of Fujikura's PAAM, demonstrated through various Over-The-Air (OTA) CATR tests, which include:
- Phase-coherent ZNA power sweeps
- Radiation patterns
- Combined power and tapering
- Independent control of phase and gain
- Temperature stability
- Beam switching
Biography:
Fabrício Dourado is a Senior Application Engineer at Rohde & Schwarz in Munich, Germany. Since joining R&S in 1996, he has held various roles in test and measurement product marketing and technical support across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Initially specializing in mobile radio and production line remote control, Fabrício later focused on component testing up to 500GHz, multi-port network analysis, and base station testing. Since April 2020, he has concentrated on 5G, automotive radar, and over-the-air (OTA) testing, as well as on OTA mmWave phased array testing in 5G NR FR2 and 4.8Gsps OTA linearization for carrier aggregation signals up to 800MHz bandwidth. Fabricio holds a degree in Electronics Engineering from the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica in São José dos Campos, Brazil.

Validate Your Dual-polarized Phased Array Beamformer Over the Air With a Phase-Coherent VNA
Join experts from Rohde & Schwarz and Fujikura as they tackle the challenges of testing future phased array systems. The device being tested is Fujikura's highly integrated FutureAccess™ mmWave phased array antenna module (PAAM). For these demanding measurements, the high-end R&S®ZNA vector network analyzer, along with the R&S®ATS800B and R&S®ATS800R compact antenna test ranges (CATR), will be utilized.
