Join us for a unique IN-PERSON workshop on High-Power Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) and Intentional Electromagnetic Interference (IEMI) including LIVE demonstrations!  Presented by industry experts, this workshop is FREE to attend, but you must register in advance as seating is limited.  All IEEE members and guests are welcome to attend!

During this IN-PERSON workshop, attendees will gain insights into recent developments in HEMP and IEMI research, with a specific focus on high voltage generator technology. The sessions will explore solutions related to repetitive high voltage pulse generators, including their usage and measurement techniques. Hosted at a facility specializing in high voltage equipment for HPEM and IEMI, participants will benefit from demonstrations and discussions in an authentic industrial setting: Montena is world leader in the construction and deployment of high voltage generators.

The agenda brings you in contact with practitioners and experts in the field, featuring a welcome from the Switzerland EMC Chapter and an overview of Swiss EMP/IEMI research by Dr. Carlos Romero of Armasuisse Science + Technology. Presentations will cover the latest technologies, shared by the Montena R&D Team, MPE, and ETS-Lindgren team, as well as insights from EPFL.

The program promises engaging discussions on protecting critical infrastructure and offers state-of-the-art information, facilitated by industry experts. Enjoy complimentary refreshments and lunch provided by the Switzerland EMC Chapter while you network and learn from peers and experts. Join us for a day of cutting-edge insights and dynamic discourse in this increasingly important field.

Our Workshop Chair is Dr. Carlos Romero with Armasuisse Science + Technology, a noted expert in this area.  Please see his biography and the Preliminary Technical Program Agenda below.

Dr. Carlos Romero of Armasuisse Science + Technology

Biography:

Dr. Carlos Romero is a Senior Scientist at Armasuisse in Thun, Switzerland. He received his B.Sc. degree in 2001, his M.Sc. degree in 2006, and his Ph.D. degree in 2012, all in Electric Engineering from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). For his Ph.D. degree, he worked on the lightning electromagnetics of the Säntis Tower for the EMC Laboratory at EPFL, where he also completed a postdoc in Electric Engineering in 2013.  At Montena Technology SA, where he worked as an R&D Engineer from 2014 to 2018, Dr. Romero was responsible for the design and construction of high-power electromagnetics (HPEM) systems. He made significant contributions to the understanding, design, and improvement of MV generators, the conception of vertical and horizontal simulators, and the design and improvement of measurement systems for HPEM systems. His work also included research and development of electric and magnetic field sensors and specialized measurement instrumentation for HPEM setups, as well as the analysis and simulation of large electromagnetics problems with various organizations around the world.

Mr. François Volery of Montena Technology SA

Topic:

Design and Applications of Repetitive High-Voltage Generators

Biography:

François Volery received an engineering degree from the Ecole d'ingénieurs de Fribourg in 1986, and a master's degree in electrical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) in 1990. He began his career as research engineer in telecommunication industry in Switzerland and in the USA. After holding positions in R&D, product management, strategic marketing, sales and business development, he completed his study with an Executive MBA at the Haute Ecole de Gestion de Fribourg.

François Volery joined Montena in 2007 to develop the company's new activity as supplier of test & measurement equipment. He setup an international sales network and succeeded in positioning Montena as a recognized worldwide leading supplier of reliable test systems and equipment for EMC, NEMP and HPEM (high power electromagnetics) test applications.
