The IEEE Central Indiana Joint PES/PELS/IAS Chapter is pleased to host Dr. Yangmin Ding from NEC Laboratories America for an insightful webinar on Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) technology and its latest applications in power grid monitoring. One PDH will be available to those who attend the entire webinar.

Abstract:

As modern power grids face increasing challenges-from aging infrastructure and extreme weather to cybersecurity threats and the rise of distributed energy resources (DERs)-utilities need real-time, high-resolution monitoring solutions to enhance reliability and resilience. Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) is emerging as a transformative technology that leverages existing fiber-optic networks to provide continuous, wide-area visibility of grid assets without requiring additional power or sensors.

In this talk, I will explore how DFOS enables utilities to detect and localize anomalies in real-time, from faults and mechanical stress on power utility infrastructures to environmental impacts like rainfall, icing, and temperature changes. I will also discuss how DFOS enhances predictive maintenance, physical security, and storm preparedness, ultimately helping grid operators make faster, data-driven decisions. Through real-world case studies, I will highlight how utilities are deploying DFOS to improve operational efficiency, reduce downtime, and strengthen grid resilience.
