Innovating Healthcare for All


The Hackathon is a one-day challenge designed to inspire and equip students with the skills to transform innovative biomedical ideas into viable startups. Hosted by the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) Chapter, this competition will immerse participants in ideation, business planning, and pitching. Students will form teams, develop groundbreaking biomedical product or service concepts, and present their business plans to a panel of "investors," gaining hands-on experience in entrepreneurship within the biomedical field.

Biography:

Dr. Ramzi Moufarrej

Chief Medical Officer
Consultant Internal Medicine/Pulmonary Disease

Chief amongst the many achievements of his career, Dr. Ramzi has earned his Medical Degree from the American University of Beirut and has completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center; Durham, North Carolina.

Dr. Ramzi is also a proud Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School Boston, Massachusetts, and has completed a clinical research & fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital; Boston, Massachusetts.

Prior to joining us, Dr. Ramzi was Chief of Critical Care, at Zayed Military Hospital: Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Hala of National Multiple Sclerosis Society UAE

Biography:

Hala Zainal, based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, is currently a Senior Program Manager at National Multiple Sclerosis Society UAE. Hala Zainal brings experience from previous roles at National Projects Office - Presidential Court, Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority, Special Olympics UAE and Crustique Bakery L.L.C. Hala Zainal holds a 2023 - 2025 Master's degree in Behavioral Sciences @ The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). 


Maria of Khalifa University

Biography:

Dr. Maria de Fatima Domingues received her PhD in Physics Engineering in December 2014, at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. In 2015, she started a Research Fellow position at the Instituto de Telecomunicações – Aveiro; and the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC)-Madrid, Spain. 

Dr. Domingues authored and co-authored more than +110 publications and has an active participation in Portuguese National and European R&D projects. She is an active member of several IEEE Societies (IEEE EMBS, ComSoc), and since January 2022, she is the Secretary for the IEEE EMBS Portuguese Chapter.

Her current research interests embrace new photonic based sensing solutions and its biomedical and e-Health applications. 

Moe of Khalifa University

Biography:

Mohamed (Moe) Elgendi is an Assistant Professor at Khalifa University with extensive experience in Biomedical Engineering, focusing on AI-driven innovations for health. His expertise spans wearable technologies, contact and non-contact biomedical sensing, textiles, machine learning, algorithm development, data analysis, health data visualization, and knowledge translation. He has also received specialized training in data analytics from MIT.

Previously, Dr. Elgendi served as the Deputy Director of the Biomedical and Mobile Health Technology Lab at ETH Zurich, where he played a key role in establishing the lab, mentoring students, and developing course materials. He has also held positions at Nanyang Technological University, the University of Alberta, and the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Elgendi was ranked among the top 2% of scientists worldwide by Stanford University in 2021, 2022, and 2023. He serves on the editorial boards of several journals and has published over 170 scientific works. He has secured numerous competitive grants and contributed to global health initiatives. In addition to his research, Dr. Elgendi has supervised over 40 MSc and BSc thesis students, many of whom have gone on to secure PhD scholarships at prestigious institutions such as MIT and Harvard.
