The speaker of the session addressed the gathering about the facts behind usage of sanitary pads which has several practical, health, and societal implications and discussed the following:
· Hygiene and Health Benefits:
· Sanitary pads are a safe and convenient way for menstruates to manage their periods, reducing the risk of infections caused by poor hygiene practices.
· Prevention of Reproductive Tract Infections (RTIs): Regular changing of sanitary pads (every 4-6 hours) can prevent bacterial growth and infections.
· Accessibility, Affordability and Environmental Impact:
· While disposable sanitary pads are widely available, they can be expensive for people in low-income groups, leading to period poverty.
· Reusable cloth pads and menstrual cups are eco-friendly and cost-effective alternatives gaining popularity in recent years.
· Most disposable sanitary pads are made of 90% plastic, contributing to non-biodegradable waste.
· Many companies now offer biodegradable and organic pads that are eco-friendly and reduce the risk of skin irritation.
· Innovative products are being designed to monitor flow or include therapeutic benefits, such as odor control or cooling effects.
