STEM School Outreach Program
As part of the IEEE ComSoc WICE ‘International Women’s Day 2025 Exemplary Contest’, the IEEE ComSoc SCT SBC conducted a School STEM Outreach Program for young girls who had freshly entered Class 10. It was conducted at L’ecole Chempaka School - Silver Rocks. As with all fields, women are severely underrepresented in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and this discourages young girls from pursuing STEM careers. Despite the significant contributions women have brought over the years, there continues to be a lack of acknowledgement of the same. Through this STEM Outreach Program, speakers were able to explain what STEM exactly is and why, specifically female students, must choose STEM. The age group chosen for this session is one that is at a crucial step of choosing which path to follow.
The session was led by a team of IEEE members - Alfy Joseph Kunjumon, Arun Aravindakshan, Meghna J Pai, Aakash Anand, Fathima Meera, and Mahreen Zuraiq. All the 6 speakers were ComSoc members. The speakers gave various talks regarding STEM with a focus on Women in STEM. The program was attended by 65 young girl students.
There was an engaging and interactive session with a project demonstration of a drone made by Arun. There was an engaging session of IoT (Internet of Things) where the students were given microprocessors, sensors etc. and were familiarized with their uses. A few other projects were also displayed. The students were asked various questions during each session, and rewarded for the same.
It was a wonderful program with active participation by the students throughout. By the end of the program, the students were highly motivated to take up STEM career paths.
