Getting a PhD degree probably is one of the most challenging tasks in your life and it would be one of the biggest achievements in your life too when you make it to the finish line. Doing a PhD is not a linear process. There are a lot of bumps on the road. The PhD journey is often accompanied with high peaks of full of joys and happiness and with low troughs of desperation and loneliness. Dropout rates vary by discipline, but a lot of students experience setbacks or doubts about their journey. This talk will discuss some strategies and tips that may help you to survive your PhD. We will discuss how to set realistic expectations, stay focused and efficiently use your time, how to build up a healthy relationship with your supervisor and your peers, and how to deal with conflicts, depression, and enjoy your freedom and social life.

Prof. Anding Zhu

How to Survive a PhD

Biography:

Anding Zhu received the Ph.D. degree in electronic engineering from University College Dublin (UCD) in 2004. He is currently a Professor with the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, UCD. His research interests include high-frequency nonlinear system modelling and device characterization techniques, high-efficiency power amplifier design, wireless transmitter architectures, digital signal processing, and nonlinear system identification algorithms. Prof. Zhu published more than 200 peer-reviewed journal and conference articles and graduated 22 PhD students.  Prof. Zhu is an IEEE Fellow. He served as the Secretary of the Administrative Committee (AdCom) of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S) in 2018 and has been an Elected Member of the IEEE MTT-S AdCom since 2019. Prof. Zhu is currently MTT-S President-Elect and will serve as MTT-S President in 2026. Prof. Zhu is a frequent speaker at international conferences, educational events and career development forums.
