The IEEE Providence Section thanks you for your continued membership in the world’s largest professional technical association.

Senior member is the highest grade for which IEEE members can apply. IEEE members can self-nominate, or be nominated, for Senior member grade. If you are interested in upgrading to Senior member, please keep reading.

After the upgrade event, please stay to help the Section acknowledge our members who received IEEE Region 1 Professional Awards.

After the awards have been presented, please feel free to join us for a no host dinner at the venue.

Benefits of Senior Membership
Recognition: The professional recognition of your peers for technical and professional excellence.

Leadership Eligibility: Senior members are eligible to hold executive IEEE volunteer positions.

Ability to refer other candidates: Senior members can serve as a reference for other applicants for Senior Membership.

Review panel: Senior members are invited to be on the panel to review senior member applications.

Letter of commendation: A letter of commendation on the achievement of Senior member grade will be emailed to your employer (upon your request).

Announcements: Announcement of elevation can be made in section/society and/or local newsletters, newspapers and notices. Contact your Section Chair for more information.

Senior member plaque: A plaque (fine wood with bronze engraving) you can proudly display for colleagues, clients and employers.


Senior Member Grade
Prospective members who would like to apply directly for Senior member grade should join IEEE and then submit the Senior member application form. IEEE members can self-nominate, or be nominated, for Senior member grade. Membership grade elevation is free–of-charge and available to IEEE members who meet or exceed the grade elevation requirements:
  be a member
  ten years in professional practice (somewhat less for additional education)
  five years of "significant performance" in professional practice

Upgrade Event
The Providence Section is hosting an IEEE Senior Member Upgrade event which will allow members to network with Senior Members who are potential references for their applications. Please bring copies of your CV / resume for potential references to review.

Award Presentation
Please stay to help the Section acknowledge our members who received IEEE Region 1 Professional Awards. Musa Jouaneh, for more than three decades of outstanding university-level teaching in mechatronics, and for authoring three influential textbooks in this field. Ruolin Zhou, expressing sincere gratitude for over a decade of teaching and research in the field of Computer Engineering.

Member Upgrade Process Talk

Briefly discuss the "why" and the "how" of advancing from IEEE Member to IEEE Senior Member. Questions to follow.

Biography:

Howard is an IEEE Senior Member and was the 2015 IEEE President, (2014 President-Elect and 2016 Past President), 2011-2012 IEEE Vice-President for Member and Geographic Activities, 2009-2010 Chair of the IEEE Public Visibility Committee, and 2008-2009 IEEE Region 1 Director.  In addition Howard served IEEE Region 1 Northeast Area Chair, and various positions in the Providence Section including as 2023-2024 Chair.  Howard was a Director at Large on the IEEE Foundation 2022-2024.

Professionally, Howard was CEO of ARRL, the National Association for Amateur Radio.  Previously, he was founding Chief Technology Officer at UBTECH Education, and Senior Vice President of UBTECH Robotics, a Shenzhen, China, AI and robotics company.  

Howard was also Visiting Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Science, University of Johannesburg, Johannesburg, South Africa.  Previously he was a member of the faculty at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and the University of Dayton, Dayton Ohio, USA.  He holds two patents and has published a textbook, 15 refereed journal papers and 70 conference papers, posters or abstracts in the fields of artificial intelligence and optical computing. He has graduated 3 Ph.D. and 40 M.S. students. 

Prior to that, Howard was a U.S. Air Force officer, having served as a pilot, satellite launch director, engineer and engineering manager, including a tour in the People’s Republic of China where he served as a senior U.S. Government technical representative enforcing technology-transfer control plans and procedures during two satellite launch operations.
