The Agenda of this Kick Off Meeting will include speakers discussing 5G, AI & Cybersecurity.
We have an Invited Speaker: Jon Pelson is the Author of Wireless Wars and a leading voice in the local conversation on wireless technology, national security, and the strategic importance of 5G. Jon will deliver a keynote on the geopolitical dimensions of wireless innovation and how Ieee members can contribute to securing our technological future.
Eric Burger, General Chair for IEEE MILCOM 2025 in Los Angeles, from Virginia Tech will speak remotely as well to promote the upcoming 2025 MILCOM in Los Angeles.

The meeting will be held at 3:00 pm (to 6:30 pm) at the University of Texas San Antonio, downtown campus San Pedro | Building at 506 Dolorosa St. This building houses the new School of Data Science with programs in artificial intelligence, computer science, data analysis and statistics and is also the home of the National Security Collaboration Center.

IEEE MILCOM 2025
Dr. Burger will present information about the upcoming 2025 MILCOM that is going to be held this year in Los Angeles.
He will be speaking remotely to this group in San Antonio.
Biography:
Dr. Eric W. Burger is the Research Director of the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative and a Research Professor at Virginia Tech. His work focuses on secure communications, 5G, threat intelligence, and technology policy. He previously served as CTO of the FCC and Assistant Director at the White House OSTP. He’s also held leadership roles in industry and holds over 20 patents. Dr. Burger is the General Co-Chair for MILCOM 2025, taking place October 6–10 in Los Angeles.

Invited Talk: Wireless Wars, National Security and Lessons for the DoD in the Global 5G Competition
Jon Pelson is the invited speaker. The speaker will cover topics around Wireless Wars, National Security and Lessons for the DoD in the Global 5G Competition
Biography:
Jon Pelson served as the Chief of Convergence Strategy for British Telecom, developing a global wireless plan for the company. During his time with these and other telecom companies, he traveled to China and saw that country's fledgling telecommunications companies grow and eventually seize the world lead in 5G and other critical technologies. With deep personal experience in the sector and rare access to the people who run the world's largest telecom companies, he decided to investigate how the lead was lost to the Chinese and what we could do to take it back.
Jon has a degree in economics from Dartmouth college and an MBA from the Darden School at the University of Virginia.

IEEE MILCOM and Local IEEE 5G Activities
Upon completion of invited speaker talk the group will discuss the formation of a local group focused on 5G, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Cybersecurity. This group aims to promote collaboration, innovation, and awareness of MILCOM 2025, taking place October 6–10 in Los Angeles.
Biography:
Dr. Brian Kelley
Dr. Brian Kelley is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and is an expert in wireless communications, AI/ML, and 5G/6G systems. He leads research on AI-enabled wireless systems, and his work supports both national and DoD priorities. Dr. Kelley is serving as the Technical Program Co-Chair for MILCOM 2025 and is a key leader in advancing 5G and AI research in the San Antonio region.
