IEEE Nuclear Presentation Series - Canadian Journey on Nuclear Energy - from CANDU to Small Modular Reactors
IEEE Presentation Series on Nuclear Energy and Small Modular Reactors
The IEEE Vancouver Section and the IEEE Future Directions Committee are organizing a series of presentations to address the widespread interest in clean energy sources, new nuclear reactor technologies, and the various related issues. This series of talks will cover aspects of nuclear energy and the disruptive new technology of Small Modular Reactors. These presentations will be of interest both to engineers who are not nuclear specialists, and to the general public who are interested in learning about the technology.

Canadian Journey on Nuclear Energy - from CANDU to Small Modular Reactors
This presentation is the fourth in the IEEE Presentation Series on Nuclear Energy.
Professor Jing Jiang will discuss Canada's history in nuclear energy, from CANDU to SMRs and ANRs.
As a Tier 1 nuclear nation, Canada has a rich history of innovation in nuclear energy development and has contributed to the world with technologies ranging from uranium mining to the production of medical isotopes and, most of all, clean power generation via a fleet of CANDU nuclear power plants.
In this talk, we will take you back to the early development of nuclear power industries in Canada and journey through various stages of development until the present day of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
We will discuss various types of SMR and Advanced Nuclear Reactors (ANRs) technologies, their development and deployment stages, and potential advantages and challenges.
The talk attempts to lead the audience on a journey from Canada’s glorious past to our bright future in nuclear energy, highlighting challenges and, more importantly, opportunities for next-generation engineers and scientists.
Biography:
Dr. Jing Jiang received a Ph.D. degree from the University of New Brunswick in 1989. He has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Western Ontario, London, ON, Canada since 1991, where he is currently an NSERC/UNENE Senior Industrial Research Chair Professor.
His current research interests include fault-tolerant control of safety-critical systems, advanced control of power plants containing non-traditional energy resources, and instrumentation and control for nuclear power plants. He is a registered professional engineer (P. Eng.) in Ontario and a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and a life fellow of IEEE.
