In this session titled “Democratizing Air-to-Air Radars: Sense and Avoid,” Prof. Lo Monte will explore the new world-wide opportunity of deploying compact, cost-effective radars to enable sense-and-avoid capabilities in Urban Air Mobility (UAM) platforms. The lecture will highlight how radar-based perception and autonomous navigation are becoming central to the future of aerospace and intelligent mobility systems.

Democratizing Air-to-Air Radars: Sense and Avoid
This Distinguished Lecture will explore how radar technology is being transformed to support sense-and-avoid capabilities in Urban Air Mobility (UAM) platforms. Prof. Lorenzo Lo Monte will introduce technical and practical aspects of democratizing air-to-air radar systems — making them compact, affordable, and scalable for widespread use in autonomous aviation. The talk will highlight global opportunities and system-level innovations shaping the future of intelligent airborne platforms.
Biography:
Prof. Lorenzo Lo Monte is the Chief Scientist at TTM Technologies and currently serves as the Vice President of Conferences and Chapter Coordinator for the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS). He is a Distinguished Lecturer (2016–2026) with expertise in radar systems, cognitive sensing, embedded autonomous systems, and sensor fusion.
Dr. Lo Monte has delivered numerous invited talks and technical lectures worldwide and holds extensive experience bridging industry and academia in the domain of intelligent sensing and autonomy. His work spans military, civil, and emerging urban air mobility platforms. He has authored numerous publications and is widely recognized as a thought leader in cognitive radar and sense-and-avoid systems.
