This talk focuses on an essential aspect of Green Communication, i.e., transmitter efficiency. PA and feeder networks consume 65% of the power in a base station. Reducing power consumption in PA directly impacts the overall power consumption. Enhancing PA efficiency has a huge social impact by reducing the CO2 footprint in wireless network technology. It is well known that 5G/6G applications have signals with high PAPR, and achieving good efficiency in PA will be challenging in such a scenario. The transmission bandwidth has increased five times in 5th-generation and beyond communication systems compared to 4G communication, which imposes stringent conditions on power amplifier design in terms of linearity and efficiency. This talk presents critical challenges for implementing a linearization solution for broadband power amplifiers. The limitations and salient features of digital and analog predistortion implementation will be offered. The talk will further explore implementing hybrid predistortion techniques to achieve lower implementation costs with enhanced performance. It is shown that for carrier aggregated broadband 5G communication signals, the proposed hybrid solution provides a lower footprint area and lowers digital signal processing cost compared to state-of-the-art digital predistortion solutions, which is a lucrative offering for mmWave and terahertz communication systems. In addition, proposed techniques are evaluated for MIMO and beamforming applications for 5G/6G applications while considering the cost of digital implementation into consideration. An innovative application of the PA digital linearization technique is shown for multiplier nonlinearity, where the C-band signal is upconverted to the mmWave signal without additional LO, hence providing low-cost mmWave signal generation.
