Expert Talk on "Smart Eyewear for Monitoring Cardiovascular Health and Mental Condition"
IEEE Hyderabad Section is organizing a distinguished technical talk on the topic “Smart Eyewear for Monitoring Cardiovascular Health and Mental Condition”, delivered by Dr. Kevin Hung, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at Hong Kong Metropolitan University.
This session will explore the potential of smart wearable technology, specifically smart eyewear, for continuous and non-intrusive monitoring of cardiovascular and mental health. Dr. Hung will discuss the correlation between physiological indicators such as pupillary dynamics, eye movements, and head movements with health conditions. The talk will also cover biosignal processing and feature extraction techniques used in the development of smart m-health systems.
This event aims to provide attendees with insights into emerging interdisciplinary research bridging electronics, biomedical engineering, and healthcare.

Smart Eyewear for Monitoring Cardiovascular Health and Mental Condition
As global populations age, healthcare systems face increasing pressures. Mobile health (m-health) solutions—through wearable sensors and communication technologies—offer potential for continuous, non-intrusive monitoring. In this talk, Dr. Kevin Hung will introduce the development of a smart eyewear m-health system, which uses pupillary dynamics, eye and head movements to assess cardiovascular and mental conditions. He will also discuss biosignal processing and feature extraction techniques powering such systems.
Biography:
Dr. Hung is currently Associate Professor and the Head of
Department of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at the
School of Science and Technology, Hong Kong Metropolitan
University (HKMU). He is the principal investigator of numerous
projects funded by both the government and the university. Prior to
joining HKMU, Dr. Hung held the position of Assistant Project
Manager at the Joint Research Centre for Biomedical Engineering
at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He also worked as an Electronic
Engineer at a medical device company. Dr. Hung's academic credentials include a
B.Sc. from Queen’s University in Canada, and both an M.Phil. and Ph.D. from
CUHK. His research interests span a wide range of topics, including biosignal
processing, biosystem simulation, biomedical informatics, mobile health, wearable
sensors, quantum machine learning, and engineering education. Dr. Hung is currently
serving as the Vice Chair of IEEE Hong Kong Section, Past Chair of the Electronics
and Communications Section of IET Hong Kong, committee member of IET Hong
Kong Branch, and Honorary Treasurer of the Chinese Institute of Electronics (Hong
Kong). He is also a founding officer of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and
Biology Society (EMBS) Hong Kong – Macau Joint Chapter, and served as its Chair
in 2010. He is the founding Counsellor of the IEEE HKMU Student Branch.
