What inspired you to become an Engineer?  Are you the type of person who looks for opportunities to experiment with technology – just for the fun of it? Amateur Radio is a hobby that provides participants with an unlimited opportunity to explore science and technology in fun ways while making friends and getting involved in club activities and community events.  The opportunities are truly unlimited.

Come join us on May 27th at 3:00pm at Hub350 where you will hear from members of the Ottawa Amateur Radio Club about how to get your Amateur Radio License and see some of the technologies they build and use. Learn more about the club activities and community events that they support.

You will have an opportunity to get “Hands-on” during this session.

Also, the IEEE AP-S/URSI Conference will be held at the Rogers Centre in downtown Ottawa (https://2025.apsursi.org/) this year from July 13-18, 2025.  IEEE-SIGHT will be there.  The Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology (SIGHT) program is a network of IEEE volunteers around the globe that partner with under-served communities and local organizations to leverage technology for sustainable development.  There is great interest from the local Amateur Radio community to work with us to develop a SIGHT Chapter in Ottawa.  Perhaps this is an area that some of you may also be interested in.

Roger Egan of Ottawa Amateur Radio Club

Biography:

Roger is recently retired after a rewarding career including technical and business development roles in the High Tech and Information Technology spanning global companies and local start-ups. He has a diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology from Algonquin College. He is married with two adult children and lives in Beaverbrook (Kanata).
Roger is currently the President of the Ottawa Amateur Radio Club. He got his Basic with Honours Amateur Radio Certificate in 2017 and upgraded to the Advanced level Certificate in 2024.
He was host to the Youth On The Air (YOTA) Camp held at Carleton University in July 2023 where 30 youth ages 15 to 25 travelled from across Canada and the US as well as Mexico, Argentina, Germany and Croatia to explore Amateur Radio and build community. He raised $60,000 to donate an Amateur Radio facility comprised of the latest in Amateur Radio technologies for Carleton University to use ongoing. Thanks to local IEEE Chapters for being a sponsor and financial contributor for this event.
Together with a number of other New Hams, Roger helped create New Hams Ottawa, a website with resources for newly minted HAMS to help them get started. As well, he helped create ARDF Ottawa and acquired equipment for Fox Hunting, GeoCaching and FRS radios to be able to deliver activities to Scouts and other local community groups as part of an evolving Radio Scouting Program. Again, a big thank you to local IEEE Chapters for financial support.
Roger’s focus continues to be on developing sustainable partnerships with community groups in the Ottawa area where there are opportunities for mutual benefit. OARC offers Amateur Radio courses to help you get your Amateur Radio certificate. They invest in and maintain equipment for use by community and club members. They host a broad range of club activities and support a number of local community events providing radio communications.
