David López-Pérez

Topic:

What Will 6G be? Fundamentals and the impact of upper mid-band spectrum

Biography:

Dr. David López-Pérez is a Distinguished Researcher at Universitat Politècnica de València since Feb. 2023. Prior to this, David was an Expert and Technical Leader at Huawei Technologies, Paris, and a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Nokia Bell Labs, Dublin. David's research began with a PhD in wireless communications at the University of Bedfordshire, UK, as a PhD Marie-Curie Fellow. Following his doctoral studies, he enriched his profile further as a post-doctoral researcher at Kings College London, UK.

Throughout his career, David has been dedicated to exploring the intricate realms of both cellular and Wi-Fi networks. His primary research interests encompass large-scale network modeling, network performance analysis, network planning and optimization, small cells, massive MIMO, green networking, drone communications, big data, machine learning, and innovative technology and feature development.

As main contributions, David contributed to advancing the theoretical understanding of small cells and ultra-dense networks. He has also pioneered groundbreaking work in areas such as cellular and Wi-Fi inter-working, network energy efficiency, and the development of multi-antenna capabilities and ultra-reliable low-latency features for hyper-critical wireless networks.

David's leadership experience is equally diverse, having managed interdisciplinary research teams of varying sizes at both Nokia Bell Labs and Huawei Technologies. His teams have seamlessly integrated wireless expertise with mathematics, big data analytics, and machine learning to drive innovation and achieve remarkable results.

David has authored a book on small cells and another on ultra-dense networks. He has also published 13 book chapters, +75 journal articles, and +100 conference papers on a diverse array of related topics. Beyond academia, David's has a patent portfolio, which comprises over 60 patent applications. His outstanding contributions to the field have earned him recognition as a Bell Labs Distinguished Member of Staff in 2019, in addition to numerous prestigious awards, including the IEEE ComSoc Best Young Professional in Industry 2016 and the IEEE WCNC 2019 Best Student Paper Award, as well as the IEEE Globecom 2022 Best Paper Award.

David's impact extends to his roles as a project lead at the Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Alliance and as a retired editor of IEEE TWC. His work is widely recognized, with over 11,000 citations, an h-index of 48, and an h10-index of 100, underscoring the profound influence of his interdisciplinary contributions on the field of wireless communications and beyond.
