Robotic Process Automation (RPA) in Manufacturing
The upcoming session on “Robotic Process Automation in Manufacturing”, organized by Y2NPro 2025 under IEEE Young Professionals Sri Lanka, will be held on the 10th of May 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM IST, via Zoom. As a continuation of the Robotics in Industry 4.0: Automation and Smart Manufacturing Workshop Series, this session will delve into the integration of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) within manufacturing environments and its growing role in accelerating digital transformation in Industry 4.0.
The session will be conducted by Dr. Achala Pallegedara, a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, with expertise in Robotics, AI, Mechatronics, and Data Science. Drawing from his diverse academic and industry experience, Dr. Pallegedara will explore how RPA is being leveraged to automate repetitive, rule-based tasks across the manufacturing value chain—boosting productivity, reducing errors, and enabling human workers to focus on higher-value activities.
Participants can expect to gain a deep understanding of how software bots and intelligent automation are streamlining operations such as inventory management, production scheduling, quality inspection, and supply chain coordination. The session will also highlight the synergy between RPA and emerging technologies like IoT, AI, and edge computing, showcasing practical applications and implementation challenges in real-world manufacturing scenarios.
An interactive Q&A session will follow the presentation, providing attendees with the opportunity to engage directly with the speaker and clarify concepts related to automation strategies and technology adoption in industrial settings.
Organized and hosted by IEEE YP Sri Lanka, this session promises to offer valuable insights for professionals and students interested in the future of smart manufacturing and the pivotal role of automation in shaping Industry 4.0.

Biography:
Dr. Achala Pallegedara is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, specializing in Robotics, Mechatronics, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Saga University, Japan, an M.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa, and a BSc. Engineering (Hons) in Chemical and Process Engineering from the University of Peradeniya. He also completed certification in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the Chartered Engineering Institute (CEI UK). Dr. Pallegedara completed a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship funded by the European Commission at the Czech Technical University in Prague, where he led projects involving high-performance simulations and sensor technologies for advanced concrete systems. He brings over a decade of academic experience and six years in the software industry across Sri Lanka, India, and the USA, having held roles ranging from software engineer to senior technical lead. He has directed numerous undergraduate and postgraduate programs in computing, networking, and engineering, including partnerships with Plymouth and Dublin Universities. His current research focuses on intelligent systems, IoT, embedded applications, and high-performance computing. He also serves as a mentor and advisor for national-level engineering initiatives, including SEDS Sri Lanka’s Serendib 1.0/2.0 high-altitude balloon missions and the Thaprobane 1.0/2.0 rover development projects.
