Topic:

Kingston Area Electric Ferries Plus…

Kingston Area Ferries have served Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River for over a century. This talk will take a look at two of these ferries and their replacements. The discussion will start with an overview of the location, routes, and some of the requirements that were necessary for the design for the new ferries. With that information in hand we will take a trip to where the ferries were manufactured and return with the ferries to Lake Ontario where there will be a more in depth look at the new ferries and the new systems that they use. After looking at the on-board systems, the discussion will move to the dock side and the on-shore facilities. Energy delivery to the eFerries will be discussed and how the on-shore energy management systems will be able to mitigate the peak demands that would have been required from the local power companies. We will also have a brief look at some of the local generation systems that complement the eFerries.

The last section of the talk has a “Plus…” section which highlights some interesting discoveries that were made when researching the 2 Kingston Area Electric Ferries.
