Rubén Barrera-Michel will share insights into the wide-ranging benefits of IEEE membership, including access to global professional networks, technical resources, leadership opportunities, and personal development paths.
Biography:
Rubén Barrera-Michel is a Senior Member of IEEE and currently serves as Chair of the IEEE Geographic Activities – Student Activities Committee. He holds a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Universidad del Valle de Atemajac (2003) and earned a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering in 2007 from UNIVA. Rubén has been actively involved in empowering students and young professionals across IEEE Region 9, promoting leadership, collaboration, and innovation in technology.

Erick Fuentes of Independent Professional & IEEE Volunteer
The Impact of IEEE on My Professional Career
Erick Fuentes will reflect on how his journey through IEEE helped shape his professional identity and opened doors to global networks, leadership roles, and technical innovation. He will also highlight the role of IEEE in community impact and emerging technologies.
Biography:
Erick Fuentes Merchán is a Mechatronics Engineer with a strong passion for innovation, sustainability, and technology. He holds a Master’s degree in Industry 4.0 from Universidad Internacional de La Rioja and is currently completing a Master’s in the Internet of Things.
Professionally, Erick has held both strategic and technical roles, including Analyst at Épico Gye and Coordinator of Startlabs at Coworking StartUPS, where he fostered innovation ecosystems and mentored technology-driven initiatives. As a past president of IEEE, Erick has led multidisciplinary teams and promoted projects that integrate technology and community.
He is an active speaker on topics such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and additive manufacturing. Erick has published two academic papers and is involved with IEEE Entrepreneurship in Region 9. He also leads social impact initiatives like INSPIRA, which promotes digital literacy and supports women-led startups across Latin America.
