Bond—as they share insights from their remarkable careers in science, engineering, and project leadership. This session is designed for early- and mid-career professionals seeking to chart a meaningful path in their field.

Drawing from decades of experience, Evelyn and Leonard will discuss how to creatively plan your professional development, the vital role of networking and collaboration in driving innovation, and the often-underestimated value of management skills in advancing both technical and leadership careers.

Dr. Leonard Bond

Biography:

Dr. Bond graduated with his Ph.D. in Physics, in 1978, from the City University London. He has experience as an academic, in industry and national laboratories. Most recently he was a Professor at Iowa State University in both Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering.  He “retired” in 2022 and became Professor Emeritus, Iowa State University,  but continues to be active as a consultant. His previous positions include being a Laboratory Fellow at PNNL, a Research Professor, University of Colorado, Boulder and Reader in Ultrasonics, University College London. He has been an invited speaker at many national and international meetings. He has been author or co-author for 19 books (most as editor), for 23 book chapters, more than 90 peer reviewed journal papers and more than 220 papers in conference proceedings and he holds 10 patents. He has held various positions in IEEE and was Director IEEE Region 6 (2009-10), he is an Honorary Professor, Beijing University of Technology, he is a Senior Member IEEE, Fellow, AAAS and Fellow, UK Institute of Physics.

Ms. Evelyn Hirt

Biography:

Ms. Hirt has built a multidisciplinary career spanning engineering and management across industry, government, academia, and consulting. With deep expertise in systems and controls engineering, she has contributed to a wide range of applications including nuclear reactors, defense and aviation systems, manufacturing, and safety-critical technologies. Her roles have evolved from engineer-researcher to project and program manager, with a strong emphasis on delivering risk-informed, technology-based solutions. She is recognized for her leadership, mentorship, and contributions to technical standards and R&D initiatives. Her professional honors include elevation to Senior Member in IEEE, INCOSE, and ASQ, and the prestigious 2021 IEEE Haraden Pratt Award.
