FET100 and Golden Jubliee Celebration of IEEE Delhi Section: Technical Talk on The Chips-IT Foundation and the European Chips Act
The Chips-IT Foundation and the European Chips Act
Professor Enrico Sangiorgi, University of Bologna and Chips-IT Foundation
In this talk I will first describe the European Chips Act initiative which entered in to force at the end of 2023, and then the new Chips-IT Foundation. In 2023, the Italian Government funded Chips-IT Foundation, a public-private research foundation dedicated to the semiconductor sector. The foundation will coordinate the activities of the country’s research ecosystem, in close collaboration with the private sector. This will include the build-up of internal research groups, the participation to the main Initiatives of the European Chips Act such as Pilot Lines, Design Platform and Competence Centers and the development of training programmes for researchers and/or workers. The foundation is based in Pavia, the city emerging as Italy’s Fabless Valley thanks to a decades-long collaboration between academia and semiconductor companies. The foundation will focus its research activities on the fields where Italy already has a renowned tradition, and which are likely to play a major role in the industries of the future. This will include analogue/mixed signal and digital IC design, with interactions with wide- and ultrawide-bandgap semiconductor technologies (such as SiC and GaN).
