Key issues & challenges in the implementation of Microgrids
The increasing integration of distributed generation (DG) sources such as solar, wind, and storage systems is driving the transition toward decentralized energy systems, with microgrids emerging as a promising solution. Microgrids offer enhanced flexibility, reliability, and resilience by enabling localized control and operation. However, their effective implementation is hindered by several critical issues. Key challenges include control complexities in coordinating multiple DG units, reliable islanding detection, protection scheme adaptation for bidirectional power flow, and ensuring overall system stability under dynamic conditions. This talk highlights the main issues associated with microgrids and discusses emerging research directions aimed at addressing these challenges through advanced control strategies, robust protection mechanisms, and resilient microgrid architectures.
