On 20 June 2025, the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Malaysia Chapter successfully hosted the annual IEEE PELS Day celebration, themed “Empowering Innovations in Power Electronics and Drive”. Held virtually via Google Meet, the event drew participants from both local and international communities, highlighting the global spirit of collaboration and knowledge sharing that defines IEEE PELS.

Since becoming a full-fledged society within IEEE in 1987, IEEE PELS has commemorated 20 June every year as a day of engagement, education, and networking. This year’s celebration continued the tradition with an exciting agenda filled with technical talks, professional development opportunities, and chapter engagement sessions.

Event Highlights

Session 1: Industrial Insights in Power Electronics and Drives

The celebration began with Welcoming and Opening Remarks by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Rahimi Baharom, Chair of IEEE PELS Malaysia Chapter.

This session featured two industry-led talks:

  • Dr. Mahdi Tousizadeh (Technical Specialist – Motor Control, EvoIQt Ltd, United Kingdom) presented “Advanced Methodologies for Control System Verification and Validation”, providing an in-depth look at industrial approaches to system verification and assurance.
  • Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Freddy Tan Kheng Suan (University of Nottingham Malaysia) shared “Gallium Nitride Technology: Design Challenges and Possible Solutions”, highlighting real-world applications and limitations of GaN technology in modern power systems.

Session 2: Elevate Your Professional Standing – IEEE Senior Member Pathway

This session guided eligible IEEE members through the process of applying for Senior Member status. Facilitators included:

  • Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Tan Chee Wei
  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shahrin Md Ayob (IEEE PELS Malaysia ExCom)

Participants received valuable insights into the eligibility criteria, application strategy, and endorsement requirements. Notably, one successful submission for IEEE Senior Member elevation was completed live during the session, marking a key milestone for the event.

Session 3: PELS Pulse – Member Dialogue & Chapter Improvement

The day concluded with an interactive session aimed at strengthening chapter engagement. Moderators:

  • Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Rahimi Baharom
  • Ts. Dr. Wan Noraishah Wan Abdul Munim (Secretary, IEEE PELS Malaysia Chapter)

This open dialogue allowed members to share feedback, propose new initiatives, and collaborate on ideas for improving chapter activities and member outreach.
