ITS in Urban Mobility – City Readiness Assessment (Guest Lecture by Prof. Marijana Petrović)
The IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society Serbia and Montenegro Chapter is pleased to invite members and interested students to a guest lecture by Prof. Marijana Petrović from the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering.
The lecture, titled “Bridging the Gap: A Participatory Approach to Assessing ITS Readiness for Smart and Sustainable Urban Mobility”, will focus on the development and application of a methodological framework for assessing the readiness of cities to implement ITS solutions. Drawing on the experience from the SMARTMOBAIR project, the presentation will explore a self-assessment tool co-designed with local stakeholders and technical experts to evaluate technical maturity, scalability, interoperability, and sustainability impact of smart mobility systems.
This event also includes a short introduction to the IEEE ITSS S&M Chapter and informal networking after the lecture.

Bridging the Gap: A Participatory Approach to Assessing ITS Readiness for Smart and Sustainable Urban Mobility
The deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) is a key enabler of smart and sustainable urban mobility. Yet, cities often face significant challenges in aligning technological readiness with planning needs. This lecture presents the development of a methodological framework designed to assess such gaps, as applied in the SMARTMOBAIR project, where six ITS solutions are being piloted in diverse urban contexts across Southeast Europe.
The lecture focuses on the design and structure of a self-assessment tool created through a participatory process involving local stakeholders and technical experts. It examines how the methodology supports the appraisal of maturity across smart mobility domains and associated advanced Key Enabling Technologies (KETs), including technical readiness, interoperability, scalability, sustainability impact, and user acceptance.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the conceptual, technical, and collaborative challenges encountered during the development and application of the approach—highlighting lessons learned in building a practical, adaptable tool for evidence-based ITS planning.
