PES Seminar: The Challenge of Knowledge Management in a Changing Nuclear Energy Sector
This talk will describe some of the unique and difficult issues facing the nuclear sector related to knowledge management and provide an overview of the various programmes the IAEA has implemented to help Member States address them. These range from initiatives focused on: strengthening nuclear education in the Member States; developing methodological guidance related to lifecycle management of design knowledge; and facilitating the development and adoption of advanced semantic technology such as knowledge organization systems and knowledge mapping.

John de Grosbois, Ph.D.
Biography:
Dr. John de Grosbois worked in the Canadian Nuclear Industry for Atomic Energy Canada Ltd. (AECL) for 20 years in various branch manager and project manager roles in Product Development at both the Chalk River national labs and at their head office in Mississauga. During this time he focused mostly on modernization of the CANDU plant instrumentation, control and display systems. He holds a dual-major Bachelor’s in Electronic Information Systems Engineering and Industrial Systems (process control option) Engineering from U of Regina, an MBA from U of Saskatchewan and a PhD in Production and Operations Management from Carleton U. He has just returned from a 5 year term appointment as Section Head of Nuclear Knowledge Management at the Int’l Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. He is an associate editor of the ASME Journal of Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science. He is Canada’s Chief Delegate and Chair of the National Committee of IEC Tech Committee 45 on Instrumentation, Control and Electrical Systems for Nuclear Facilities. He has chaired many international panels and meetings and also sits on two university engineering faculty educational advisory boards. He is now consulting with the Candu Owner’s Group and is a sessional lecturer at UOIT Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science for the Winter semester.
