Thin Film Transistors (TFT) have become essential devices in Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Displays (AMLCDs) and large area low cost electronics applications, and have a huge potential for flexible, printed and wearable electronics. We give an overview of the history of TFTs since their invention in 1957, and describe the evolution of TFT technologies, addressing the different semiconductor materials used for the active layer and their properties. Finally, we explain the challenges of TFT technologies for the implementation of the Internet of Things, in particular regarding flexible and wearable applications.

Biography:

Benjamin Iñiguez obtained the Ph D in Physics in 1996. In 2001 he joined the the  Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona, Spain) as Titular Professor and became Full Professor in 2010. His main  research interest is the compact modeling of advanced semiconductor devices, including Organic and Oxide Semiconductor Thin-Film Transistors. Multi-Gate MOSFETs and GaN HEMTs. He has published more than 180 papers in journals.  He led two EU-funded research projects (about compact modeling) and participated as team leader in six more.  He is IEEE EDS Distinguished Lecturer since 2004. and Vice-President of the EDS Subcommittee of Regions and Chapters since 2024. . In 2019 he was elected IEEE Fellow due to his contributions to compact modeling."
