ABSTRACT “AI reshaping work practices”:
The role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the future of work has been the subject of extensive discussion for some time. However, much of this discourse remains speculative, and there is still limited deep empirical understanding of how AI is substantively transforming work practices. Drawing on a series of ethnographic research projects, Marleen Huysman presents insights from her research group into the tangible ways in which work is evolving as AI is integrated into organizational contexts—highlighting, in particular, the often unforeseen consequences for knowledge-intensive labor. She places special emphasis on the potential long-term implications of generative AI technologies, such as ChatGPT and Midjourney, for the social dynamics within organizations.
Short Bio of Marleen Huysman:
Marleen Huysman is professor at the School of Business and Education, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where she is heading the AI@Work research group. Marleen is founding director of the KIN Center of Digital Innovation and is using and promoting ethnographic methods to study how AI tools are developed, introduced and used in various organizations and industries. Marleen’s latest interest is in how Generative AI tools are changing knowledge work. Her work has been published in books and many international peer reviewed journals. Marleen is currently visiting professor at the House of Innovation, Stockholm School of Economics.
Short Bio of Lynda Hardman:
Prof. Lynda Hardman is Principal Researcher & Strategist at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), Amsterdam, and Professor of Multimedia Discourse Interaction at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. She chairs the SURF Scientific Technical Council, the national association that provides Dutch educational and research institutions with state of the art data, network and compute facilities. She has served on the European COST Scientific Committee since 2021 and was appointed Chair in 2025. She is a member of the Scientific Directorate of Schloss Dagstuhl and the Scientific Advisory Board of the Mannheim Center for Data Science. She is involved in promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in the Dutch academic community through the ICT-Research Platform Netherlands. Hardman is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and an ACM Distinguished Scientist.
