Biosensors for point of care applications

During this transformative, Prof. T. G. Satheesh Babu will focuse on the applications of nanomaterials for developing Point-of-care Diagnostic
devices. Choosing the right catalyst for the direct electrocatalytic oxidation/reduction of the target molecule is the key step in the fabrication of enzyme-free sensors. With the advancement in the development of nanomaterials, many new electrocatalysts with enhanced surface area and specificity have been developed.
The first part of the talk, in particular, focuses on the development of nanomaterials for enzyme-free biosensing of various metabolites and ions and their integration into a lab-on-a-chip device. Electrochemical immunoassay has been extensively used for the ultrasensitive detection of cancer biomarkers. As this assay involved multiple steps, such as incubation with the sample, washing and then incubation with a labelled secondary antibody, etc, translation as a POCT device is challenging. The second part of the talk discusses the development of an automated electrochemical immunoassay platform for the POCT of cancer biomarkers. Point-of-care detection of microorganisms has been a challenge, as they are conventionally detected by culture-based methods or molecular diagnosis. The third part of the talk focuses on the culture-free electrochemical detection of pathogenic microorganisms. The last part of the talk is on the development of paper-based analytical devices for liver function tests.
Prof. T. G. Satheesh Babu currently serves as Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore Campus. Prof. Babu leads the Biosensor Research group and Amrita Biomedical Engineering centre at the Coimbatore Campus and Heads the Amrita Biomedical Engineering (AMBE) centre. He also serves as the Research Head for the School of Physical Sciences at the Coimbatore campus.
