Abstract: An update on all things hydrail – freight and passenger – from UBC Okanagan engineering Professor Gord Lovegrove, together with his German collaborator, Dr Holger Busche. Gord & Holger will update us on UBCO’s latest hydrail research, as well as on their research exploring technical and economic feasibility case studies of inter-city, hydrail light rail for Canadian travellers & investors.

Professor Gord Lovegrove

 

 

 

 

Biography:

Associate Professor, School of Engineering (civil), Faculty of Applied Science, UBC Okanagan

Professor Gord Lovegrove, helped start the UBCO School of Engineering in 2005, where he teaches and researches sustainable community development. His expertise covers: homelessness, cohousing, net zero buildings, walkable neighborhoods, road safety, bicycling, transit, and hydrail tram-trains – systems that promote a more sustainable quality of life for all, as part of his SMARTer Growth Partnership research lab. He was lead engineer responsible for the design and launch of the UBC Student U-Pass program, which resulted in a 300% increase in transit ridership and a reduction of over 10,000 tonnes of annual GHG emissions. Gord has also served on UBCO, Provincial, and community boards, including: UBC Senate, Kelowna Gospel Mission, Fresh Outlook Foundation, Safe Routes to School, BC Cycling Coalition, and the BC Road Safety Committee. Dr Lovegrove is a former federal departmental science advisor to Transport, Infrastructure, and Environment & Climate Change Canada Deputy Ministers. He is an avid lake swimmer, educator, and mentor. He service as DSA until October 2022, when he was elected to Kelowna City Council, and has since served on several regional boards related to: Libraries, Bio-solids, Water, and Agriculture.

Dr. Holger Bushe

Biography:

 

 

Dr. Holger Busche, former Science Advisor on Energy & Transport, Germany helped launch the worlds first commercially operated hydrail passenger train in Germany in 2018, the iLint Coradia. He has been collaborating with Dr Lovegrove for ten years, and has made several trips to Canada over that time. He is not only an energy & transport expert, he is a Director of an historic German railway. He has recently retired and lives with his wife in Kiel, Germany.
