Automotive Ethernet and CANBUS testing with a VNA
Automotive Ethernet and CANBUS testing with a VNA Data communications in modern automotive systems have evolved rapidly.
Legacy CAN bus, with a maximum data rate of 1 Mbps (or CAN FD up to 8 Mbps),is increasingly supplemented or replaced by automotive Ethernet standards such as IEEE 802.3bp, BW, and CH, supporting data rates up to 10 Gbps. These high-speed links are essential for transporting video, critical sensor data, and control signals with acceptable error rates. A Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) is a key tool in evaluating the signal integrity of these systems over twisted-pair and coaxial transmission media. VNAs enable precise measurement of insertion loss, return loss, mode conversion, and impedance uniformity. In addition, validation of shielding effectiveness is vital, particularly in electric vehicles where data must be transmitted reliably alongside high-voltage, high-current switched DC lines. This presentation will review example VNA measurements for automotive data links and shielding, and highlight the applicable industry standards, including IEEE 802.3, ISO 11898-2, OPEN Alliance TC9, and CISPR 25.
Biography:
Brian Walker is the Senior RF Engineer, SME at Copper Mountain Technologies. He helps customers resolve technical issues and develops new solutions for VNA applications in test and measurement. Previously, he was the Manager of RF design at Bird Electronics, where he directed a team of RF Designers and created new and innovative products. Prior to that, he worked for the Motorola Component Products Group and was responsible for the design of ceramic comb-line filters for communications devices. Brian is a Senior Member of the IEEE, graduated from the University of New Mexico, has 40 years of RF Design experience, and has authored 3 U.S. Patents.
