Topic:

Towards Enhanced Dialogue Systems Integrating Personality Modeling, Emotion Recognition, Hospitality with Generative AI

Generative AI, particularly driven by recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs), has significantly enhanced dialogue systems, enabling them to generate more contextually coherent and human-like responses. However, current dialogue systems still have limitations in effectively understanding and adapting to individual users. To move towards enhanced dialogue systems, this presentation begins by examining how user personality traits influence dialogue task performance, followed by the development of personality-aware task-oriented dialogue systems. Next, the presentation covers techniques for real-time emotion recognition leveraging multimodal and physiological sensor data, enabling dialogue systems to dynamically adjust responses according to users’ emotional states. Lastly, multimodal and time-series analyses conducted on mobile robot guidance interactions are presented, providing insights into factors contributing to hospitable and engaging user experiences. Integrating these approaches offers the potential for creating personalized, responsive, and human-like interactions.

Biography:

Ao Guo received his M.S. degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China, in 2016, and his Ph.D. from Hosei University, Japan, in 2021. Since 2021, he has been a postdoctoral researcher at the Graduate School of Informatics, Nagoya University. From 2024, he has been involved in the Moonshot R&D Program, “The Realization of an Avatar-Symbiotic Society where Everyone can Perform Active Roles without Constraint.” His research interests include Personalized Generative AI, Task-oriented Dialogue Systems, and Hospitable Mobile Guidance Robots. Dr. Guo has published his research at leading international conferences in dialogue systems and human–robot interaction, including SIGDIAL and RO-MAN. He received the IEEE CPSCom Best Paper Award in 2016, the IEEE HITC Outstanding Ph.D. Dissertation Award in 2022, and the Outstanding Paper Award at IEEE CPSCom in 2023. In recognition of his early stage research achievements, Dr. Guo was received the JSPS KAKENHI Grant-in-Aid for Early Career Scientists in 2025. He was among the first in Japan to teach a course on generative AI, titled “Generative AI with Large Language Models,” at Hosei University since 2024.
