Abstract

Cross-Polarizations are one of the primary sources of spurious radiations emanating for microstrip antennas. In various applications including satellite communications, and RADARs, we require antennas with low cross-polarized radiations. For years, several efforts were made by different research groups to understand the sources of cross-polarizations and subsequently, different approaches were evolved for mitigating the issue. It includes the use of perturbations in ground planes, use of shorting pins, modifications of patch surface, optimizing feed locations etc. However, based on the antenna geometry, novel techniques are required to suppress cross-polarized radiations effectively. Till date, researchers are exploring newer mechanisms to address the issue of cross-polarized radiations from planar antennas and their arrays.
