[Legacy Report] Applying Computer Science and Software Engineering to Software for eLearning Systems
One cannot write software without knowledge of the application domain. The application domain we address here is education and training. There is an unsaid premise in e-learning software that testing is through multiple choice questions. And teaching is through a one way transfer of knowledge, mostly using multimedia. We question this premise and present a case wherein a different approach is used. We attempt to capture the lessons learned from this exercise. Then we turn to a proposed platform for technological support for e-learning. This has been partly realized in our attempts to serve the cause of Adult Literacy in our country. In this, we have tried to capture the idea of software components, reuse, software product lines and software manufacture. There is still unfinished business. We conclude by hazarding the shape of this remaining work, and try to correlate it with existing ideas in software engineering.
