S.T.A.R. Mentors Needed for Cool Science: Be Part of the Next Chapter in IEEE Pikes Peak Section Outreach
What does S.T.A.R. stand for? S.T.A.R. is an acronym for STEAM-TEAMS Ambassadors for outReach
Over the past six months, we’ve proven that when IEEE members roll up their sleeves, remarkable things happen:
✅ 20+ members and family supporters joined hands-on STEAM-TEAMS meetings (Feb–Jul 2025)
✅ 500+ community members inspired through outreach demos at Cool Science and Filipino American Community of Southern Colorado (FACSC) cultural events
✅ New and Potential Partnerships with Cool Science, FACSC, the Mickelson Foundation (created by an IEEE Life Member) and UCCS,
✅ Invited keynote at the Miss Fil-Am Coronation—opening doors for future IEEE–FACSC potential collaborations in underserved communities
These are not just numbers—they represent moments when science sparked curiosity, technology met imagination, and community discovered IEEE’s impact.

For those interested in the spirit of Bayanihan, a communal Filipino word in the language of Tagalog, it is basically a term similar to John Wooden's term of 'TEAM SPIRIT' of 'WE supercedes ME'. Dr. John Santiago when preparing his keynote-like talk realized that the IEEE Pikes Peak Section STEM initiative of STEAM-TEAMS has the same spirt of Bayanihan. His talk was held at the DoubleTree Hotel on 23 Aug 2025, Colorado Springs CO. Here, Dr. Santiago introduced IEEE to over 178 attendees of the Miss Fil-AM Coronation event, hosted by the Filipino-American Community of Southern Colorado (FACSC). Since FACSC existence in 1993, they have developed an impressive system of mentorship to sustain this community of leaders through consistent and annual cultural events in developing their youth navigating between American and Filipino cultures. More information can be found at: https://r5.ieee.org/pikespeak/facsc where a recordings, souvenir programs, and other documentation to help potentially work alongside this valuable and visible organization.
