Distinguished Lecturer: Energy Cyber-Physical Systems and their Communication and Control Challenges for operational Sec

Dr. Osama A. Mohammed is a Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Associate Dean of Research in the College of Engineering and Computing at Florida International University (FIU), where he directs the Energy Systems Research Laboratory and its Smart Grid Testbed Facility. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech and has been with FIU since 1983.

An internationally recognized expert, Dr. Mohammed’s research spans smart grids, energy cyber-physical systems, computational electromagnetics, electric drives, transportation electrification, and renewable energy integration. He has authored over 800 peer-reviewed publications, holds 20 patents, and has written a book and multiple book chapters.

A Fellow of the IEEE, National Academy of Inventors (NAI), and Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (ACES), Dr. Mohammed’s honors include the prestigious IEEE PES Cyril Veinott Electromechanical Energy Conversion Award, FIU’s Outstanding Research Award, and Outstanding Doctoral Mentor Award.

He has served in leadership roles for major IEEE conferences and as editor for top IEEE journals. As an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer (2024–2026), he continues to advance global knowledge in power and energy systems, while mentoring the next generation of engineers and researchers.
