The session will comprise an overview of Calian products and services, with a focus on its software defined radio (SDR) platform. This platform is used by Calian to implement a range of digital modems. Through a series of case studies, we’ll explore how digital radio architectures can become time-variant—and why this can cause failures that are especially challenging to detect and test.
Linear time-invariant systems are the starting point for this type of analysis because linear time-invariant properties allow for reasonably straight forward mathematical modeling. More complex real-world designs often break these properties, in some cases intentionally in order to allow better performance to be achieved, and in some cases unintentionally. When time-variant behavior occurs over long timescales, it can be extremely challenging to test. Ideally, this type of behavior can be predicted early in the design process and then mitigated at the architecture level. The case studies provide examples of four classes of real-world long time variance in a digital modem: intrinsic-design, intrinsic-defect, extrinsic-design, and extrinsic-defect.

The presentation will provide an overview of Calian Advanced Technology- its products and services. In particular, its software defined radio platform will be described. This will be followed by a series of case studies about how a digital radio architecture becomes time-variant and how this can cause it to fail in ways that are challenging to identify and test.
Biography:
Wilson Brenna joined Calian Advanced Technologies in 2016 and is a senior hardware engineer in the digital design section. He received a B.Sc. in Mathematics and B.E. in Engineering Physics from the University of Saskatchewan, followed by an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Waterloo. He has been working on embedded systems designs for the satellite and cable communications sectors with special interests in digital signal processing, discrete mathematics, and applied statistics.
