The Denver YP Networking Social Event for IEEE GHTC 2025 will run from 6 pm to 8 pm on Friday, October 24th at the Labriola Innovation Hub at the Colorado School of Mines. The attendees will have an opportunity for learning, networking, and community building. We will have a few speakers talking about their career journeys, and how we can learn from them.

Manika of Jacobs

Topic:

Manika's career journey

Manika will speak about her transition from school to career, her career journey, and her experience as she worked in the engineering consulting industry. Manika will also focus on graduating seniors and those early in their careers so they can learn from her.
 

Biography:

 
Manika Gupta is a Professional Electrical Engineer in the states of Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico and Utah. She is the Vice President and Global Delivery Director at Jacobs Inc., a leader in infrastructure consulting and design. After graduating from engineering school in New Delhi, India, Manika started her career in the lighting industry, and then transitioned to designing thermal power plants. She moved to engineering in the water industry at Jacobs (then CH2M) in U.S. and found her choice of career: designing and implementing power distribution and control systems. Over her thirty-five year career, she has had a diverse, global experience of working in India, Singapore and the U.S. She connects design opportunities to talent, and has been a Project Manager, Design Manager, Quality Control Reviewer, Staff Group Leader, and Lead Electrical Engineer for design and services during construction of several water projects in western U.S. She lives in Aurora, CO and when not working, enjoys traveling, hiking in the Colorado mountains, singing with a local choir group, and reading.

Sajith of National Renewable Energy Laboratory

Sajith's career journey

Sajith will speak about his work in energy systems, and how he transitioned from school to a research career, and his experience of working at an advanced energy systems research lab. Sajith will also focus on graduating seniors and those early in their careers so they can learn from him.

Biography:

Sajith Wijesuriya is a Research Scientist at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. His research involves grid-level decarbonization, increasing resilience of human settlements against extreme climates, advanced building energy modeling and advanced thermal energy storage systems analysis. He is also a Visiting Scientist at the Colorado School of Mines where he contributes to research on the same topics above. He works for and co-manages three Clean Energy Ministerial workstreams: Solutions Center (SC), which provides assistance to developing countries to design and implement clean energy policies, and resolve deployment-related challenges, NICE Future Initiative on Nuclear Energy policy assistance, and 21st Century Power Partnership, which serves as a platform for public-private collaboration to advance policy for the large-scale deployment of renewable energy in combination with deep energy efficiency and smart grid solutions.

He is a Global Expert on SDG7 to the UNDESA UN-Energy process and a IRENA Youth Council Member. He is also a Climate Negotiator for Sri Lanka on Global Stocktake. IEEE MGA has appointed him as a representative to the Sustainable Climate Matrix Organization (TSCMO) to lead its external outreach subcommittee and IEEE PES appointed him to lead the young professionals advisory council 2026-27.

Jessica of Artful Pathways

Motivated by a desire to understand how energy decisions are made, who makes them, and what information is used, Jessica has held a career spanning technical, strategic, and leadership roles in the energy sector. She will share about her journey and the search for work that aligns with her values. 
 

Biography:

Jessica Lau is a Leadership Coach and Grid Strategy Consultant who helps leaders and teams build the trust, communication, and alignment needed to do their best work. With nearly two decades of experience in the electric power industry, Jessica combines technical expertise and human-centered strategies to power the future grid. Known for her big-picture thinking and results-driven leadership, Jessica partners with organizations to develop strategic roadmaps that turn vision into reality. She has led initiatives with Fortune 500 companies and government agencies, establishing vital partnerships with local communities and technology developers. Her expertise includes transmission and distribution planning, smart grid technology, wholesale energy markets, and resilience projects. She has worked at ISO New England, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Xcel Energy, and Con Edison. Jessica holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Math and an M.S. in Power Systems Management.
