About TNO DSS
TNO’s Defence, Safety & Security (DSS) unit develops innovative solutions to make society safer and more resilient. Working closely with government, industry, and international partners, DSS combines cutting-edge research with practical applications in defence technology, cybersecurity, intelligence, and crisis management. Innovations are developed and applied in radar and sensor systems, electronic warfare,
situational awareness, cybersecurity, and data intelligence.

History
The Waalsdorp site traces its origins to 1 December 1927, when the “Meetgebouw” laboratory of the Dutch Commission for Physical Armament (Commissie voor Physische Strijdmiddelen) commenced operations.
Under pioneers such as Ir. J.L. van Soest and Jhr. Ir. J.L.W.C. von Weiler, research at the site encompassed aeroacoustics, early radar, underwater acoustics, and radio-frequency systems. Although much of the pre-World War II material was lost or destroyed during wartime, a revival of preservation began in 1977 in preparation for the 50th anniversary of the TNO Physics Laboratory. In 1969, the laboratory relocated to its
current Waalsdorp facilities.

Today, Museum Waalsdorp brings together the legacy of the earlier DSS laboratories, including the LEOK, and tells the story of five world-changing inventions that were created at Waalsdorp.

LMAG members to Waalsdorp are offered insight into that rich technological heritage alongside current research efforts, showcasing how historical foundations continue to inform modern defence, safety and security innovation.
