HERtech LED Assembly Workshop, held on 18 May 2025 at TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, empowered 30+ Kudumbashree women with hands-on skills in LED bulb and tube assembly. Organized by IEEE IA/IE/PELS Joint Chapter Kerala with IEEE PELS WiE, SIGHT Kerala, and EdSoc Kerala, the program promoted sustainable energy, gender equality, and entrepreneurship.

The HERtech LED Assembly Workshop, held on 18 May 2025 at TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, empowered over thirty women from Kerala’s Kudumbashree mission with technical skills and entrepreneurial awareness. Organized by the IEEE IA/IE/PELS Joint Chapter Kerala in association with IEEE PELS Women in Engineering (WiE), IEEE SIGHT Kerala, IEEE EdSoc Kerala, and community partner KV Nagar Resident Association, Kollam, the initiative combined hands-on learning with social transformation.

The program aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 5 – Gender Equality, SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy), advancing both technological empowerment and sustainability.

The morning session focused on LED bulb assembly, introducing the benefits of modern 9W LED bulbs over traditional CFLs, environmental hazards of mercury, and India’s energy-saving needs. Participants engaged in interactive demonstrations of components—PCB, diffuser, base caps, holders, casing—and practiced assembly and troubleshooting to promote repair culture and waste reduction.

The afternoon session emphasized LED tube light assembly, offering guided training in construction, operational principles, and practical assembly. Discussions inspired women to consider launching micro-enterprises that support community energy efficiency.

By the end of the workshop, participants demonstrated enhanced confidence, market-ready skills, and enthusiasm to explore entrepreneurial pathways. More than just technical training, the event instilled environmental consciousness, leadership, and a strong belief in self-reliance.

Key contributors included Prof. Sunitha Beevi. K (Chair, SIGHT Kerala, PELS WiE & EdSoc WiE Kerala), Dr. Biju K. (Chair, IEEE IA/IE/PELS Joint Chapter Kerala), Dr. Shyni K. (Secretary, IEEE IA/IE/PELS Joint Chapter Kerala), Dr. Bijuna Kunju (Advisor, IEEE IA/IE/PELS TKM Student Branch), Prof. Reshna S. (Advisor, IEEE EdSoc TKM Student Branch), and Mr. Madhu Krishnan (Energy Consultant, Lead Trainer).

The workshop concluded as a replicable model of technical empowerment, bridging the gap between technology and community needs. It championed women’s entrepreneurship, green energy adoption, and community resilience, proving that HERtech is not just a workshop, but a movement towards sustainable, inclusive development.
