30th Anniversary of the IEEE Bulgaria Section
The 30th Anniversary of the IEEE Bulgaria Section will be commemorated on October 9, 2025, in conjunction with the International Conference on Automatics and Informatics (ICAI-2025), scheduled in the city of Varna, Bulgaria, from October 9 to 11, 2025. The anniversary celebration will thereby align well with the worldwide IEEE Day events.

The IEEE Bulgaria Section Today and Tomorrow
Prof. Todor Ganchev will present an overview of the IEEE Bulgaria Section, highlighting its current activities, forthcoming events, and related opportunities.
Biography:
Prof. Todor Ganchev was the founding Head of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (2019-) at TU-Varna. He served as Vice-Rector of Research at the Technical University of Varna (mandate 2019-2023). His research interests are in Digital Signal Processing, Machine Learning, AI and their applications in bioacoustics, biometrics, and HMI. He has (co-)authored 220 research publications, including 60 journal articles and 2 monographs, and collectively received over 3600 citations by independent authors (Google Scholar h-index = 29).
Todor Ganchev (S'96 – A'99 – M'02 – SM'10) has been with IEEE for 30 years and served as an IEEE volunteer in various ways. In 1996, he actively helped establish the IEEE Student Branch at TU-Varna, and during the academic years 1996/1997 and 1997/1998, served as its first Chairman. During the academic years 1998/1999 and 1999/2000, he served as the Councillor of the IEEE Student Branch at TU-Varna. Consequently, he served as Treasurer (mandate 2021-2022), Vice Chair (mandate 2023-2024) and Chair (mandate 2025-2026) of the IEEE Bulgaria Section.

IEEE Bulgaria Section, 30 years
Assoc. Prof. Jordan Kolev will speak about the challenges in the early years after establishing the IEEE Bulgaria Section, the hard work and enthusiasm that led to all subsequent achievements. His talk is focused on commemorating some important achievements that shaped the identity of the IEEE Bulgaria Section.
Biography:
Jordan Kolev (jkolev@ieee.bg) received the M.E. degree in Electrical Engineering from Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University “LETI”, Russia, in 1971, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Varna, Bulgaria, in 1981. From 1971 to 1973, he served as an Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering at the Military University in Shumen, Bulgaria. In 1973, he joined the Technical University of Varna as an Assistant Professor in Electronics. Between 1985 and his retirement in 2011, he held the position of Associate Professor at the Technical University of Varna. Assoc. Prof. Kolev served as the Chair of the Department of Electronics and subsequently as Dean of the Faculty of Electronics at the Technical University of Varna. His research interests encompass Power Electronics, Embedded Microprocessor Systems, and Digital Signal Processing.
Assoc. Prof. Jordan Kolev (M, SM, LM) co-founded the IEEE Bulgaria Section and served as its first Chair (mandates: 1996-1997, 1998-1999 and 2006-2007). He is a Life Senior Member of the IEEE. Currently, he serves as the Chair of the IEEE Bulgaria Section Life Members Affinity Group (mandate 2025-2026).

Agenda
The 30th Anniversary of the IEEE Bulgaria Section celebration event will be held as an Opening Session to the ICAI-2025 conference. The agenda for the Opening Session includes three presentations:
(1) Prof. Todor Ganchev, Chair of the IEEE Bulgaria Section, will deliver a talk on "The IEEE Bulgaria Section Today and Tomorrow";
(2) Assoc. Prof. Jordan Kolev, Chair of the IEEE Bulgaria Section LMAG, will offer a retrospective, "IEEE Bulgaria Section, 30 years";
(3) Acad. Krasimir Atanasov, IEEE Fellow, will overview the "IEEE in support of Science and Technology – the Bulgarian contribution".
