Thomas Micallef of Polytechnique Montreal

General Presentation of IEEE Day

Opening speech from the 2025 IEEE Day Ambassador

Biography:

Thomas Micallef was born in Avignon, France, in 1999. He earned an engineering diploma from the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble in 2022 and a Master's degree in Business Management and Administration from the Institute of Business Administration of Grenoble in 2023. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at Polytechnique Montreal, within the Poly-Grames Research Center, in Montreal, QC, Canada. His research interests include energy harvesting, multifunctional radar architectures, and multiband/harmonic radar systems.

He served as the Public Relations Officer of the IEEE Student Branch at Polytechnique Montreal from 2022 to 2023, before becoming Chair of the same branch from 2023 to 2025. He is also the Founding Chair of the IEEE MTT-S Student Chapter at Polytechnique Montreal, the Student Activities Committee Chair of the IEEE Montreal Section, and, since 2025, the Lead of the New Initiatives Subcommittee for IEEE Region 7 (Canada).

He was awarded the Best Student Paper Award and a Student Grant at the IEEE Wireless Power Transfer Conference & Expo (WPTCE) in 2024. That same year, he also received a Student Grant to attend the European Microwave Week. He served as the IEEE Day Ambassador for IEEE Region 7 (Canada) in both 2023 and 2024. In 2025, he was selected as a member of the MTT-S Student Ambassador Cohort and was awarded the prestigious EuMA Internship Award
