Over the past decade, the electric power industry has seen a dramatic rise in the interconnection of inverter-based resources (IBRs) across both transmission and distribution systems. This presentation offers a personal reflection on my professional journey through this evolving landscape—from confronting early technical challenges to contributing to collaborative industry efforts that shaped emerging standards. Drawing on field experience, committee leadership, and cross-sector initiatives, I’ll share key lessons learned in integrating IBRs with a focus on maintaining and enhancing grid reliability.

Biography:

Manish Patel, PhD, PE is a Senior Principal Engineer at Silicon Ranch Corporation specializing in modeling, dynamic studies, and utility planning. Manish has a two decades of experience in protection & control applications, transmission planning, and inverter-based resource integration. In the past, he served as a Technical Executive at the Electric Power Research Institute and held various engineering roles at Georgia Power and Southern Company Services, contributing to System Protection and Transmission Planning departments conducting protection and system stability studies, including NERC compliance and IBR integration to system.

He is actively involved in industry standards development through NERC and IEEE, holding leadership roles in multiple working groups. A Senior Member of IEEE, Manish has authored numerous technical papers and regularly presents at leading conferences. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Clemson University.
