Topic:

Cross-Border Electricity Market Coupling: A Comparative Perspective of Europe and India

Electricity market coupling enables neighboring regions or countries to integrate their power exchanges, optimizing cross-border transmission and harmonizing prices through a unified market clearing mechanism. In Europe, advanced market coupling creates a highly integrated system that aligns supply, demand, and transmission across multiple countries, driving price convergence and efficient use of interconnectors. India's approach, initiated by the Power Market Regulations 2021, is still in its early stages, focusing on coupling its three national power exchanges to promote better price discovery, enhance liquidity, and pave the way for future cross-border trade with regional partners. While Europe exemplifies a mature model of cross-border coordination, India's journey is ambitious but nascent, relying on infrastructure improvements and regulatory reforms to emulate the European success story.
