The Science Program at the Sanford Underground Research Facility
Building on rich legacies, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South
Dakota, has been operating since 2007 as America’s underground laboratory to advance
compelling multidisciplinary research. A brief introduction to the facility and the science
program will be presented, covering leading edge physics research into neutrinos, dark matter
and nuclear astrophysics, as well as geology, biology and engineering research currently
performed at SURF. Also, SURF’s successful programs in science education, public outreach, and
community engagement will be outlined.

Markus Horn
Biography:
Dr Markus Horn is a senior research scientist with SURF since 2016. Horn has worked with
experiments searching for dark matter in underground facilities in France, the United Kingdom,
and the United States for more than 15 years. Originally from Germany, his academic career
took him to London, Oxford, Yale, and Berkeley, before he came to work at SURF.
