Topic:

Understanding MMC Building Block for HVDC Gateway Empowering Renewable Integration

Dr. Bhattacharya's session focused on High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology and its role in renewable energy integration. He explained the fundamentals of DC transmission, noting its self-insulating properties during faults and its cost-effectiveness over HVAC beyond a certain distance. A key limitation discussed was the absence of a DC transformer. The talk covered various inverter technologies, including two-level, three-level, and five-level inverters, as well as cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverters. Dr. Bhattacharya also detailed advanced configurations like single-star and double-star cascaded bridges. The session concluded by emphasizing Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs), particularly half-bridge submodules, as the essential building blocks for HVDC gateways that facilitate large-scale renewable energy integration
